With its notes of liquorice, probably one of the most fragrant spices. Star anise belongs to the same botanical family as magnolia, the magnoliaceae. It is indigenous to China and Vietnam where it is used mainly to spice up duck and pork. It is also used in marinade (for turkey, among others), in drinks (especially in punches) and Asian-style dishes.
