Their Latin name is papaver somniferum, meaning sleeping poppy. In other words, poppy seeds are said to have sleep-inducing properties. But not only that: their latex is also used in the manufacture of narcotics such as morphine, heroin and opium, making it, of course, one of the most cultivated plants.
