It originates from Asia Minor, i.e. the Asian part of present-day Turkey. Among the Romans and the ancient Greeks, it was the symbol of victory. It was made into a crown that was placed on the head of the winner in a chariot competition. Nowadays, its virtues are only culinary. It is mainly used for slow cooking. Friendly advice: the dried leaf is preferable to the fresh leaf because it is less bitter.
