For the record, the word “celery” comes from the Italian seleri. The plant itself is indigenous to southern Europe and the Near East. Its seed gives a lot of flavor to tomato-based dishes and it is used in soups, stews and marinades. It is also the basic ingredient of celery salt, very useful in mixology (such as the famous bloody mary) as well as in everyday cooking.
