Nutmeg arrived in the West at the time of the Crusades, in the Middle Ages. It is therefore one of the oldest spices in our regions. And one of the most used too. It lends itself to many preparations, including desserts (rice based among others) and pastries. Not so long ago, it was used to flavor whipped milk. Its gentle aromatic warmth also works wonders with root vegetables (such as mashed potatoes), pumpkin and spinach. A tip: it is better to buy it whole because it will keep longer and moreover its perfume will be more assertive when grated.
