It is a very close cousin of marjoram, therefore a member of the lamiaceae family, but its aroma and taste is much more pronounced. As is the case with most aromatic herbs, it originates from the Mediterranean basin. Oregano is obviously the perfect companion for tomato-based dishes and also, as it should be, for pizza. It is very present in Greek and Italian cuisine. Note that Mexican oregano, with which it is sometimes compared, does not belong to the same botanical family as the oregano we know. Rather, Mexican oregano belongs to the same family as fragrant verbena and its taste is more similar to savory.
